CHARADRIIFORMES: Stercorariidae

Stercorarius pomarinus  

This bird put in only a very brief appearance and stayed at a considerable distance from the boat. Just like to get the excuses for my lousy photographs out of the way first.

Fortunately the bird has a very distinctive tell in having spoon-like central feathers twisted at right-angles which extend way past the rest of the tail.

Apparently it wants nothing to do with the winter months anywhere as it migrates thousands of kilometres from the arctic regions to spend summer in the southern latitudes and then heads back to enjoy the northern summer and breed.
